DELTA DENTAL OF KENTUCKY TEAMS UP WITH BLESSINGS IN A BACKPACK TO PROVIDE HUNGER-FREE WEEKENDS FOR CHILDREN IN KENTUCKY
$300,000 donation will feed 1,000 children for three years
Louisville, KY (October 31, 2016) — Blessings in a Backpack is pleased to announce it received a $300,000 donation from Delta Dental of Kentucky’s charitable initiative, Making Smiles Happen® on Friday, October 28, to feed 1,000 children in Jefferson, Hazard, and Boone County, Kentucky, for three years. This generous donation will support Blessings in a Backpack’s mission of providing hunger-free weekends for elementary school children in our community who are living in food insecure households.
Immediately following the check presentation at Alex R. Kennedy Elementary School, Delta Dental President and CEO Dr. Clifford Maesaka and employee volunteers, dressed in Halloween costumes, packed bags of food for 340 students to take home over the weekend. Marshall Molar, Delta Dental’s mascot, gave the children toothbrushes to help promote oral health.
“We know children miss 51 million hours of school every year due to oral health issues – most of which are easily prevented. Those who are absent miss critical instruction time, especially in the early grades where reading skills are taught,” said Dr. Clifford Maesaka. “We believe in the promise of a better tomorrow for our children and Delta Dental is committed to doing all it can to provide a foundation for success.”
Delta Dental does more than just provide financial support; its employees live out the mission every day by donating their time as well. Since teaming with Blessings in a Backpack in 2012, Delta Dental employees have volunteered weekly during the school year to pack and distribute bags of food to local school children. With the launch of Making Smiles Happen in 2015, the partnership has expanded to reach more children throughout the Commonwealth.
“We are so thankful for the donation that Delta Dental is making to our Blessings in a Backpack programs in Kentucky. It is because of partners like DDKY that we are able to continue with our mission to put an end to childhood hunger,” said Brooke Wiseman, CEO, Blessings in a Backpack.
